Nollywood star and former spokesman for the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo, has claimed that it is impossible to find a southern candidate who can wrestle power from Nigeria’s incumbent President, Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The actor turned politician made this known in a recent TV interview, where he argued that handing the sole ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to a southerner is synonymous with declaring Tinubu the winner of the presidential election.

He said, “Anybody telling you to bring a fresh southerner to compete against Tinubu, a southerner, is trying to tell you to zone the ticket to Tinubu, and Tinubu will win outrightly.”

Earlier during the chat, Okonkwo said he will only support a northern candidate who is popular and capable of winning states in the region.

The thespian backed Labour Party (LP) candidate, Peter Obi, during the 2023 presidential election, but later parted ways with the former Anambra governor and left the Labour Party in 2024.

According to him, he resigned from the Labour Party  because of its internal squabbles and Obi’s failure to address them.

Obi is one of the prominent political leaders from the South in the coalition who has indicated interest in contesting for the presidency.
