Nigeria ex-international footballer, Kanu Nwankwo, has decried the orgy of deaths among footballers as he paid tributes to three senior colleagues who died during the week.

According to him, Nigeria football has been hit by spate of deaths, following the demise of three ex-international footballers in less than one week.

While Nigerians were getting to grips over the death of Sam Ikedi last week, the football community was awakened Thursday, with the shocking news of the death of ex- Nigeria goalkeeper and assistant coach of Super Eagles, Joseph Eric Bassey, famously known as Joe Erico.

Sadly, on Friday, the football community was again hit with the demise of ex- Nigeria and Enugu Rangers star, Nwabueze Nwankwo.

In a condolence message signed by Kanu, who is the Chairman of Africa’s largest and fast growing football academy, KIFA, the ex-international described the deaths of the Nigerian footballers as one death too many.

“I am still in shock over the deaths of these great Nigerians. This is one death too many. And without a doubt, Nigerian football and indeed, the whole Nigeria, will greatly miss them,” Kanu lamented.

“At this point in our national life, I call on fellow Nigerians to go down on their knees and pray fervently to God to heal our land.

“Please God help us put a stop to these deaths and other unfortunate incidents pervading the land,” the former captain of the Super Eagles and Arsenal of England player, who is fondly called King Kanu, by millions of football fans across the world, stated.
