Southampton became the second English Premier League (EPL) team to concede 4 goals at Anfield Stadium to a rampant front line of Liverpool in two weeks.

Arsenal suffered similar humiliation last week after they were given a rude awakening by Liverpool after going 10 games unbeaten in all competitions.

Diogo Jota struck after just 97 seconds after an assist from Andrew Roberson to give the home side 1-0 lead over the visitors.

The Portuguese made it a brace in the 32nd minute after he was put through by Mohamed Salah to make it 2-0 to Liverpool

Thiago Alcantara added a third in the 37th minute to cap a very effective first-half display which earned Liverpool a 3-0 lead going into the break.

A goal from former Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk early in the second half underlined the dominance of the home side, while Jota missed several chances to score a hat-trick.

Jurgen Klopp’s team, who won the Premier League in 2020, have now scored 39 goals in 13 league games this season, nine more than Chelsea, who host Manchester United on Sunday.

Klopp reverted to a stronger line-up for the visit of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton after fielding a slightly weakened side that beat Porto 2-0 in midweek.

The result takes Liverpool ahead of Manchester City temporarily as they will not play until tomorrow, it also leave them a point shy of Chelsea who also play Manchester United tomorrow.

Liverpools’ next game is a Merseyside derby against Everton in the midweek, they have 28 points and +28 goals difference respectively after 13 EPL games.

Meanwhile, Southampton remain 5 points clear of relegation, despite taking a very defeat at Anfield.
