Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has said he conceded defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 because he was more interested in Nigeria than himself.

Jonathan, who is the first sitting president to lose to an opposition party in Nigeria, made the disclosure during an interview with Arise Television on Monday.

During the chat, he said those who served under him were afraid that Buhari’s government would throw them into jail without fair hearing

He further noted that the current situation in which Buhari is handing over to the President-elect, Bola Tinubu is a different situation from what was obtainable during his time.

According to the one-time governor of Bayelsa state, while Buhari is handing over to his party, he gave the mantle of leadership to the opposition party.

Jonathan said: “The situation now is different from my time. Buhari is handing over to his own party, unlike my time when I handed over to another time.

“During my time, some of the most senior officers were afraid if the next government would throw all of us into jail without fair hearing.

“By this time, I had already conceded defeat, and this was because I was more interested in the country than myself.”
