The immediate past President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, on Wednesday sneaked into Minna, the Niger State capital, where he also held closed door meeting with the former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), at his uphill residence.
Jonathan entered the Minna metropolis at about 10:00am Wednesday in a GMC SUV with registration number, ABJ 961ER, and headed for the IBB’s hill top residence.
Though reason for the visit was not known, feelers held that the meeting between the two former Nigerian leaders, which lasted for close to two hours may not be unconnected with the state of the nation.
Jonathan was accompanied on the visit by few politicians, including the former Senator Nimi Barigha Amange who had represented Bayelsa East in the National Assembly.
“It is true that former President, Goodluck Jonathan, visited Baba today. Only the two of them, Jonathan and General Babangida, met in one of the inner rooms”, a source said, adding, ‘‘even former Senator, Amange, waited for them in one of the outer part of the residence.’’
On his way out, former President Jonathan declined to speak to journalists who already were waiting outside to get details of his visit and possibly the outcome of their meeting by simply saying with all smiles, ‘my visit to IBB is private’.
When pressed further for comments, the former president said that he was in Minna on one of his routine visits to the elder statesman because he had not seen General Ibrahim Babangida since he returned from medical vacation and felt it was the right time to visit him.
On the prevailing political situation in the country, former President Jonathan replied, “We are retired politicians”, before he was hurriedly driven out of IBB residence.
