Jonathan dismisses viral Instagram post suggesting 2027 presidential comeback

By Jeffrey Agbo

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has disowned a social media post circulating on Instagram that hinted at his alleged plan to contest the 2027 presidential election.

The controversial post, shared by an account bearing Jonathan’s name, took a swipe at the country’s current leadership, accusing them of negligence and urging Nigerians to elect better leaders in the next general election.

“Since our current leaders are pretending to sleep, we pray that we will get our good leadership back in 2027; your choice will determine the betterment of our future,” the post read.

The message was accompanied by background music and a digitally altered image — believed to be AI-generated — showing Jonathan shaking hands with former US President Donald Trump. As of reporting time, the post had garnered thousands of views and over 1,000 comments.

But speaking to TheCable on Friday, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan’s spokesperson, dismissed the post as fake and warned the public against believing content from unauthenticated sources.

“Former President Jonathan does not own an Instagram account,” Eze stated.

This is not the first time Jonathan has had to distance himself from politically motivated actions linked to his name. Ahead of the 2023 general elections, a support group purchased a presidential nomination form in his name under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move the former president flatly rejected.

“He was not aware of this bid and did not authorise it,” Jonathan’s media team clarified at the time.
