Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo is set to return to the Premier League next season after Southampton triumphed over Leeds United in a tense promotion playoff final at Wembley. The match, often described as the richest in football due to its financial implications, ended in a 1-0 victory for Southampton.
Aribo played the entire match, contributing significantly to his team’s success. Despite a slow start to the season, Aribo found his stride, scoring four goals in 38 appearances in the English Championship.
Southampton’s winning goal came in the 23rd minute, following a series of well-executed passes. William Smallbone’s precise through-ball found Adam Armstrong, who slotted the ball into the bottom corner past Leeds’ goalkeeper Ilian Meslier.

In the 67th minute, Aribo showcased his playmaking skills with a brilliant through-ball to England-born Nigeria-eligible winger, Samuel Edozie. However, Edozie’s shot missed the target.
Leeds United nearly equalized with seven minutes remaining when former Manchester United winger Daniel James hit the crossbar with a powerful volley. Despite this close call, Southampton held on to their lead.
The final whistle was met with jubilant celebrations from Southampton supporters, as the team secured their place in the Premier League. Southampton manager Russell Martin expressed his joy and gratitude in a post-match interview with Sky Sports Football.
“I feel emotional and overwhelmed by the love and support I’ve had over the past year. I’m so pleased for and proud of the team. I’ve enjoyed watching the team and players grow,” Martin said.
Despite his impressive club form, Joe Aribo was not selected by coach Finidi George for the Super Eagles squad set to face South Africa and Benin Republic in next month’s World Cup qualifiers.
