Iran has reacted to the ultimatum issued by United States President Donald Trump, who urged the Islamic Republic to open the Strait of Hormuz or face ‘attendant consequences’, warning that it is prepared to shut the strategic waterway indefinitely if the US follows through with its threat.
This position was conveyed on Sunday by the country’s armed forces headquarters as a direct response to President Trump’s 48-hour deadline.
Earlier, the US President ordered Iran to re-open the Strait of Hormuz to shipping via a post shared on his official Truth Social handle.
He warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe would be met with strikes on Iran’s power plants.
“If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST…” Trump threatened on Sunday.

Reacting to the ultimatum, the Iranian military stated that an attack on the country’s facilities would trigger a complete closure of the Strait.
“If the US threats regarding Iran’s power plants are carried out, the Strait of Hormuz will be completely closed and will not be reopened until the destroyed power plants are rebuilt,” the statement said.
The military added that all Israeli energy and communications infrastructure would be attacked, as well as “similar companies in the region with US shareholders.”
Iran further warned that the “power plants of regional countries hosting US bases will be legitimate targets for us.”
