Inspector shot, two hoodlums fatally injured as police engage armed robbers in Sagamu hotel

Police said investigation reveals the robbers lodged in the hotel before launching the attack

One inspector of police and two armed robbers sustained various degrees of injury when security operatives in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State engaged in a shootout with some hoodlums during a robbery operation in a hotel.

The brutal shootout was confirmed in a statement issued by the Ogun State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, in Abeokuta on Friday, October 6.

According to Odutola, the suspected robbers invaded the hotel in Sagamu in the wee hours and after police responded to a distress call from the hotel, a shootout transpired.

She went on to say two of the armed robbers were fatally injured, while
a police inspector and two of the hotel guards also got injured during the incident.

The police spokesperson said: “At about 1 a.m., a distress call was received by the Sagamu division that armed hoodlums were operating at the Remo Majestic Hotel in Sagamu.

“Based on the report, a combined team of policemen were mobilised to the scene.

“Immediately the hoodlums sighted the policemen, they opened fire on them, while the policemen engaged the hoodlums.

”Two of the hoodlums were fatally wounded, while others escaped into the nearby bush with bullet wounds.”

Odutola further revealed that police recovered barrel guns, four unexpended cartridges, 13 expended cartridges, 10 phones and other items from the robbers.

“two locally made single-barrelled guns, four unexpended cartridges, 13 expended cartridges, one big scissors, 10 Android phones, one Java phone, a white Toyota Venza Car with registration number BWR 123DD Abuja were among items recovered at the scene of crime” she added. 

Odutola also stated that the injured policeman and hotel guards were rushed to the Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Sagamu, where they were responding to treatment

She added that preliminary investigation uncovered that the suspected robbers had lodged in the hotel before launching the robbery attack.
