In its endeavours to see that the. Forthcoming 2015 general election, is carried out with little or no misconduct.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Friday in Abuja, set up a Committee to investigate the nullification of nineteen (19) elections conducted in 2011 for non compliance with the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) and for corrupt practices.
According to a statement from the commision, The committee, which is to the Chaired by Alhaji Abdulrahman Madaki, former deputy secretary in the commission, has up to four weeks to submit its reports .
Inaugurating the Committee in a brief ceremony held at the Commission conference hall, Chairman of the Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega, said that the purpose of the Committee was to identify the staff behind the nullification to ensure they did not play key roles in the 2015 general elections.
The Chairman regretted that the assignment was coming a bit late as 2015 elections approached but expressed the hope that the Committee, made up of experienced lawyers would be able to complete the assignment within the time frame.
The Committee terms of reference are:
To examine the circumstances that led to the nullification of the elections;
To Identify factors responsible for the nullification of the elections;
To Identify permanent/or ad-hocstaff or any other person or organizations who contributed to, or were responsible for the nullification of the election;
Apportion blames where necessary in relation to the conduct of the elections;
Recommend disciplinary measures against any permanent or ad-hoc staff responsible for, or who contributed to the nullification;
To Recommend sanctions to other organization(s) in respect of person(s) not being staff of the Commission;
Also in its duty are Recommend ways to avert such occurrences in future elections;
Report back to the Commission within four weeks of the date of inauguration of the Committee.
