“He was declared brought dead. The incident happened around 11.30pm. A probe is underway,” a police official said, but explained that the cause of his death will only be determined after autopsy.

Gogi joined AAP in 2022 and defeated former Punjab minister and sitting MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu from the Ludhiana (West) assembly constituency by 7,500 votes.

In his last post on his official Facebook page, Gogi wrote that he held a meeting with Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and environmentalist Sant Baba Balbir Singh Seechwal in a bid to clean the Buddha Nala, a seasonal stream in Punjab’s Malwa which was used for drinking and domestic purposes before getting polluted by industrial discharge and other toxic chemicals.

He wrote that he visited the Pracheen Sheetla Mata Mandir in BRS Nagar, where jewellery worth Rs 40 lakh was stolen recently.

He had “assured the priest and the temple management that the guilty will be brought to book.” He spoke to the Police Commissioner in connection with the case, urging him to take quick action, he wrote.
