Combined team of the military and the Nigerian police on Sunday prevented over 2000 supporters of All Progressives Congress from overrunning the Imo INEC headquarters with canisters. The protesters who came from various parts of Imo state alleged diversion of ballot boxes and other materials meant for the election to unknown destinations during the presidential and national Assembly elections.
The protesters who were led by the Imo State Youth and Sports Commissioner Kenneth Emelu alleged that INEC acted unlawfully by refusing to announce every result at the polling booths. They also stated that the total results must be collated and announced at the ward levels before sending same to INEC headquarters.
Prior to the protest, several INEC officials have alleged molestation, stop and search of all INEC vehicles on the road under the watch of the Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha. This was confirmed by Professor C.C. Eze and Professor Edna Njoku of Federal University of Technology Owerri respectively who confirmed the attack on them by the governor while on INEC duty in Orlu local government as returning officers.
However, journalists at the INEC office waiting anxiously for the results were advised by the Civil
Defence officers to lay on the floor in case of anticipated attack and stray bullets as the angry protesters approach the place.
