Ikwechegh set to appear before Abuja court after assaulting Bolt driver

Ikwechegh, a House of Reps member representing Abia State, assaulted the driver while delivering a package to him at a residence in Abuja

A federal lawmaker representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State, Alex Ikwechegh is scheduled to be arraigned before a Kuje Magistrate Court, Abuja, today, Wednesday, October, at 12 noon, following an allegation that he assaulted a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.

This development was disclosed by popular human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju via a statement he shared on social media.

The probe and prosecution of Ikwechegh are being handled by the Inspector General of Police’s Special Investigation Unit.

The legislator was captured in a viral video physically assaulting the Bolt driver.

The incident occurred on October 27 when the driver was delivering a package to the lawmaker at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.

After the incident made the rounds online, Nigerians took to various social  media platforms to condemn the action of the lawmaker.

Amid the outcry, the embattled lawmaker apologized and promised to cooperate with the police in their investigation. He also disclosed that he was seeking counseling over his actions.

However, while briefing Nigerians on the development on Wednesday in a  statement, Adeyanju made it known that the lawmaker was on his way to an Abuja Magistrate court. 

He said, “We are on our way to Kuje Magistrate Court for the arraignment of the honourable member who assaulted our client, Mr. Steven, a Bolt driver. The IGP’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is in charge of the investigation and prosecution.

“The media is invited to cover the arraignment, which is scheduled for 12 pm today at Kuje Magistrate.”
