Ikujenyo, others mark Africa Day in Lagos

-

Duro Ikujenyo in conjunction with Bogobiri House will mark Africa Day on May 25 beginning from 3:30pm at the hotel located in Ikoyi, Lagos and later at Freedom Park, Broad Street, Lagos.

Ikujenyo, who leads the Age of Aquarius Band and is the brain behind New Age Productions, told TheNiche that the celebration will be in two parts.

The first part is a meeting that will feature panel discussion on the said day at the Bogobiri House by 3:30pm.

The meeting, Ikujenyo said, is “for a discussion in line with ideas of African unity by our founding fathers of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, Sekou Toure, Marcus Garvey and a host of others”.

The second part, he explained, would feature a live performance at the Freedom Park by 7:10pm.

“Seun Olota and the Ecstasy Band with guests including Duro Ikujenyo, Edaoto and a host of others will take part in the performance from 7pm.  Viva Africa unity, Viva Africa day,” Said Ikujenyo.

The musician said that May 25, 1963 is very important date as the birth of the Organisation of Africa Unity (OAU), which has now metamorphosed into the African Union (AU).

“A date of victory, progress, understanding and unity celebrated all over Africa, the Diaspora and world in general to constantly remind us of our struggles, pains, bloodshed and eventual victory,” he said.

Quoting Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, under whose wing he practiced his musical craft as saying in his ‘Colo Mentality’ song “you don be slave  man before but you never release yourself”, Ikujenyo said there can’t be development until we have a super structure relevant to the need of a growing country like Nigeria and Africa as a whole.
