Alakija, husband of Africa’s richest woman, Folrunsho Alakija, gets the red card from his rich friends after engaging in a brawl

The elite Ikoyi Club decided to dramatize the suspension of Modupe Alakija by pasting his mug shot at the entrance of the club.

Modupe Alakija is the husband of Folorunsho Alakija, Africa’s richest woman.

Her husband, a lawyer, is the son of Adeyemo Alakija, the famed Nigerian legal practitioner, politician and businessman. He was a Knight of the British Empire who served as a member of the Nigerian legislative council for nine years starting in 1933. In 1942, he became a member of the governor’s Executive Council. Alakija was president of Egbe Omo Oduduwa from 1948 until his death in 1952.

In a circular signed by Bamidele Ibironke, the secretary of Ikoyi Club, Modupe was accused of physically assaulting and abusing one of its members, TheCable reported.

The notice said the suspension of Modupe Alakija would run from December 2021 to November 2022.

“The above-named member of the club is hereby placed on a one-year suspension for physically assaulting and abusing a fellow member.

“Conduct injurious to the interest of the club, thereby violating Rule 9(C) of the club’s rule book. This suspension takes effect from December 1, 2021, to November 30th 2022.”

According to TheCable, Tunde Orungbeja, the club’s general manager, confirmed the suspension of Modupe Alakija.

“(What exactly transpired) is information that I cannot share with you. Whatever happened in the Ikoyi Club is basically an internal affair. It’s a private member club and it’s managed within the club.

“If it’s anything that needs to go to the public, the club will duly notify the public about it,” he said.

In 2016, TheNiche had reported that on Forbes’ 2016 list of the world’s 100 most powerful women, the highest placed African only comes in at number 80.

Behind the likes of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and U.S. Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, Nigeria’s Folorunsho Alakija claimed the mantle of Africa’s most powerful woman, ahead of just two others in the top 100—Liberian President and Nobel Peace laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who ranked at 83, and Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, the president of the tiny Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, who came in at 96
