Lady Captain of the club, Dr. Veronica Awatai, said the tournament is in line with the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Programme (NBCCEDP), which provides access to breast and cervical cancer screening services to underserved women.

She said: “Deaths from breast and cervical cancers could be avoided, if cancer screening rates increased among women at risk.

“Deaths from these diseases occur disproportionately among women who are uninsured or underinsured.

“Mammography and pap tests (pap smear) are underused by women who have no regular source of healthcare, (and) women without health insurance.”

According to her, sports-friendly organisations have identified with the tournament and have also pledged their support.

She mentioned Diamond Bank as the major sponsor of the tournament, with support from Fidson and Emzor pharmaceutical companies as well as Lagoon Hospital.

“This is one of the several tournaments we have in line by the Ladies Section for the remaining months of the year, and we hope that we will have successful organisation and sponsorship,” she said.

Lots of prizes, trophies and gifts items would be up for grabs by participants at the end of the tournament, which is expected to be attended by women across all classes in the society.
