The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States of the country has strongly condemned the killing of 23 travellers by bandits in Sokoto State.

It was reported that bandits attacked over 30 travellers and burnt them alive, shooting those who tried to escape in the process on Wednesday, December 8, 2021.

However, the official statement by the Sokoto State Government put the number of casualties at 23.

According to the religious body, the gruesome murder of innocent travellers and many other attacks on citizens by terrorists has shown that human life is cheaper than chickens in the country.

The Vice Chairman of Nothern CAN, Reverend John Joseph Hayab made this known in a statement on Thursday in Kaduna.

Hayab said that CAN 19 Northern States and Abuja condemned the animalistic behaviour of these criminals because these terrorists have taken their crimes against Nigerians too far.

He called on the Federal Government and governors especially in the Northwest, to take strong measures to stop this evil permanently.

“How can people be productive when they are living in perpetual fear of terrorists in their homes and everywhere they go?

“Security of lives and property is a serious government business but what we are seeing today is how some of our leaders are playing politics with a serious matter that has almost destroyed the peace, joy and hope of the citizens.

“CAN is appealing to security agencies to stop the unhealthy competition amongst them and work together in unity for the common good of all Nigerians”, Hayab said.

The Reverend stated that security agencies have all it takes to defeat these terrorists, saying that CAN on its part will continue to offer prayers, support and play any role that will help to bring this evil to an end.

“CAN Northern States commiserate with families of those who lost their lives and pray that God comfort them and repose the souls of the departed” he added
