How Lagos AG violated social distancing law while prosecuting Funke Akindele for same offence

The Attorney General (AG) of Lagos  State, Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), may have violated the same law he successfully prosecuted actress Funke Akindele of.

The actress, popularly known as Jenifa, and her musician husband, Abdul Rasheed Bello, alias JJC Skillz, were on Monday, April 6, sentenced to 14 days of community service for violating the Lagos State Government law against crowded assembly when she hosted a house party.

Curiously, the AG, who vowed that all the people that attended the party would be prosecuted, later spoke with a crowd of journalists without observing the social distancing law the state government was accusing Akindele and others of violating.

“Journalists and Police covering social distancing case in court today (April 6)  in Lagos. Imagine the disrespect for the very social distancing they came to cover. God help us, ” said  Dino Melaye, a former senator representing Kogi East, while tweeting a photo of the crowded press conference of the Lagos AG.

Akindele and her husband have been convicted for 14 days community service and payment of N100,000 fine each while other party attendees are expected to get theirs today.

Among the top shots to be arraigned are Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, a chieftain of the Lagos Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was a governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) in the last election, Babatunde Gbadamosi Olalere (BOG) and his wife among others.

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, said that a warning could have been enough for the party attendees instead of arresting and prosecuting them.

“The prosecution & conviction of Funke Akindele was overbearing & unnecessary. A warning would have been enough. This is especially so after she publicly expressed remorse. The court was crowded. Why don’t  they prosecute those that were there as well, including the Magistrate?” he said.
