Housewife kills rival wife with pestle on suspicion of food poisoning

Housewife kills rival in her sleep, police describe attack as unprovoked

Police have arrested Maryam Ibrahim, a housewife who allegedly killed Hafsat her husband’s first wife in their home using a pestle to hit her head while she was asleep.

The incident occurred at Gar village, Pali Ward, in Alkaleri Council in Bauchi after Maryam suspected the victim tried to poison her with meat.

State Police Public Relations Officer Ahmed Wakil disclosed Ibrahim their husband reported the incident at the Maina-Maji l police station where the man recounted Hafsat was rushed to hospital which confirmed her death.

“On November 22, 2022, around 6pm, one Ibrahim Sambo, 40, reported that his second wife,  Maryam Ibrahim, 20, armed with a pestle, entered into his first wife’s room, Hafsat Ibrahim, 32, and hit her head with the pestle,” Wakil said in a statement.

“As a result, the victim sustained a serious injury and was rushed to the Primary Healthcare Centre, Gar village, where she was certified dead by a medical doctor.

“Upon receiving the report, a team of detectives attached to the command swung into action and arrested the suspect.

“During interrogation, the suspect voluntarily confessed to the crime.

“She revealed that on Tuesday, November, 22, 2022, around 11am, the deceased, Hafsat Ibrahim, sent her son, Abdulaziz Ibrahim, 5, with a lump of fried meat known as Tsire, to give her (Maryam). And after eating the meat, she started feeling abnormal and then vomited the meat.

“Thereafter, she called one Faiza Hamisu, the wife of her husband’s younger brother, and told her exactly what happened. She added that the said Faiza told her that it was probably an ulcer and gave her an ulcer drug.

“Subsequently, the suspect provocatively went to her kitchen, picked a pestle, and entered the first wife’s room while she was asleep and hit her on the head, leading to her death.”

Man, 29, arrested for killing friend over beer

Wakil also confirmed the police arrested Monday Ajasco, 29, for allegedly stabbing one Abdulrazak Ibrahim to death for refusing to buy him beer at Bagel village, in Dass Council in Bauchi, according to reporting by The PUNCH.

Investigation conducted by detectives found that on 16 November, around 11pm, Ajasco went to a beer parlour at Bagel village where he met Abdulrazak Ibrahim, 30, and others drinking.

“Ajasco asked Abdulrazak to buy him a beer to drink. In response, the deceased refused to do so. This development sparked a little altercation between them which displeased the suspect.

“After a while, they decided to leave the beer parlour and go to their homes while the victim left before them.

“The deceased’s friend heard screaming from his friend from afar. On reaching the scene, he met his friend lying in a pool of his blood while the suspect was standing near the victim holding a sharp animal horn in his hand.

“He also threatened to stab the victim’s friend when he asked the suspect why he did so.

“Investigation into the incident also revealed that the suspect trailed and attacked the victim’s neck with the sharp object suspected to be an animal horn.

“As a result, he sustained a serious injury and was swiftly rushed to the General Hospital, Dass, but was certified dead by the medical doctor.”

Wakil said when the investigation is completed, the case will be charged to court for prosecution.
