Hold your representatives accountable – Niger govt

-

Niger state government has challenged citizens to hold the people they voted to represent them at the federal, state and local government councils accountable if they fail to deliver electioneering promises.

The advice was part of the efforts to checkmate the activities of those political offices and ensure protection of the poor and vulnerable in the state.

Niger State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Jonathan Tsado Vatsa, gave the advice while declaring open the federal government’s Savings and Group Mobilization Training for National Cash Transfer Beneficiaries (NCTB) programme in Minna.

He said that the call has become necessary to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor.

The commissioner lamented: “There is a huge gap between the rich and poor Nigerians, the haves and the have nots, the reason there are many poor people in the country today is because the governed have failed to ask those governing them questions.

“Our people should ask questions; ask how government monies are being spent because it will bring about checks and balances. The only way to get out of poverty is to get education, but the rich and those who stole our monies are killing the system so that you don’t get informed.

“The rich in today’s Nigerian society are deliberately taking advantage of the poor and the vulnerable to get rich and that is why I agree with those who believe that the poverty and sufferings in Nigeria today is not from God but man-made.

“Many public office holders today are happy especially when you frequent their homes to complain of the hardship you are facing, they derive pleasure seeing you beg them for money.”
