The remains of the late matriarch of Awolowo family, Chief (Mrs) HID Awolowo will be laid to rest today at at Ikenne, Ogun State, the hometown of the Awolowos.
In commemoration, the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), the party founded by her husband, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo in the Second Republic, has described her as a true mother for all at a farewell programme it organised for her on Tuesday.
Prince Rotimi Paseda, the UPN governorship candidate in the last general election, who led the state chapter to the programme, eulogised the late matriarch, reeling out her virtues saying especially that the support she gave her husband during his business and political travails was unprecedented.
He described the political ideology of the Awolowo couple as exceptionally outstanding, noting its simultaneous economic and human development.
Paseda emphasised that the economic policies of the late sage, Chief Awolowo remained a struggle yet to be achieved for the nation.
“For us, the genuine quest to attain equitable, just and acceptable socio-economic growth of the nation as encapsulated in the four cardinal programme of Unity Party of Nigeria – free education, free health, employment and rural development – is a struggle that must be attained,” Paseda said.
The National Chairman of the party, Professor Bankole Okuwa, who was one of the followers of Awo, also recalled his relationship with the Yeye Oodua, whom he described as a jewel of inestimable value.
Various party dignitaries took turns to pour encomiums on Mama Awolowo at the colorful programme.
