Herdsmen attacks: Call your kinsmen to order, group tells Buhari

By Onwukwe Ezeru, Abia

The Chairman Association of South East Town Unions, Chief Emeka Diwe, has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the rampaging Fulani herdsmen, who have been inflicting pain on Nigerians, adding that he should stop the killings immediately without further delay.

Diwe, who spoke in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia State, condemned President Buhari’s silence over the invasion of communities and the killing of innocent Nigerians by the Fulani herdsmen, adding that as the Commander in Chief of the armed forces, he should ensure the protection of lives and property of every Nigerian.

He said, “As leaders of town unions in the five states of the South East zone, we are disturbed by the activities of rampaging Fulani herdsmen, who have continued to destroy farmlands, rape women and kill innocent people.

“We are further worried that President Buhari is yet to give this problem the serious attention it deserves. The Fulani herdsmen attack did not start today, but the question is; were they this daring in their attacks before Buhari emerged President? No. The truth is that only Buhari can stop his kinsmen from the attacks. This level of invasion, raping of women and killing of innocent Nigerians is suspicious. The least expensive solution which is also the most effective in solving the problem of Fulani herdsmen attack is that only Buhari can stop his kinsmen.

“People have been killed in Agatu in Benue and Ukpabi Nimbo in Enugu states. In Delta State; a monarch was kidnapped and found dead. Millions of others have been displaced from their homes. Now they have invaded another community, Ndiagu Attakwu, Akegbe Ugwu in Enugu State and a seminarian and pregnant woman, killed.

“Enough is enough; we won’t tolerate this massacre of our people in their homes again in any part of Igbo land again”.

He pointed out that Nigeria was treading on a dangerous path if the herdsmen attacks were left unchecked, stressing that President Buhari should do everything to douse the suspicion of Nigerians.

Diwe insisted that the unending herdsmen attacks in the country pose a serious threat to national security.

According to Diwe, “We are not saying Buhari sent them, but he has the authority to check their activities to avoid reprisal, otherwise, individuals and communities may resort to self-defence. What sense does it make that after people have been killed and houses burnt, security agents will be deployed to the scene of the attack”.
