Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s family home in Ihima, Okehi Council of Kogi has been attacked by gunmen for the second time in as many months.
A statement issued by her Media Office in Abuja said armed men vandalised several windows at the home on Tuesday night before they were chased away by a combination of police officers, vigilantes, and youths.
One suspect, identified as Suberu Jose – an alleged ritualist and native of Ihima said to be an ally of Natasha’s political opponents – was arrested at the scene.
Jose reportedly confessed to the crime and admitted it was his third time participating in attacks on the family home.
An angry mob attempted to descend on the suspect before he was rescued and handed over to the police. A machete and charms were recovered from him.
Other suspects armed with dangerous weapons remain at large.
The same Natasha’s family home was attacked on April 15 with no arrests made at the time but this arrest seems to mark the breakthrough against a coordinated pattern of attacks by gunmen.
The Federal Government has filed two criminal defamation charges against Natasha following her alleged plot by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to assassinate her after she accused him of sexual harassment.
“We call on the public to remain calm and steadfast in pursuing justice. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s commitment to truth and her tireless representation of her constituents should not be met with violence or intimidation,” her Media Office statement said.
