Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said his players must maintain their “intensity and fight” if they want to pip Arsenal to the Premier League title.

The Spanish tactician offered the advice while speaking to BBC Match of the Day after his side held off Newcastle to win 2-1 on Saturday night at the Etihad.

A brace from Nico O’Reilly ensured City edged the encounter, despite Lewis Hall’s initial leveller for the Magpies.

The result sees City close the gap on league leaders Arsenal to just two points.

Discussing the performance, Guardiola suggested his players “deserve three more days off” before facing “another battle in Leeds”.

“We saw today that this is how we need to play until the end of the season,” he said. “All the guys were really good. I’m really pleased with the performance.”

Guardiola added: “Of course, in terms of points it’s important, but we have to improve to have a chance to compete until the end [of the season]. Now we deserve three more days off. Then, another battle in Leeds.”
