Gowon dispels death rumour, says he’s not in a hurry to go

Gowon according to the former Minister of State for Education, Gbagi, is in the UK and he is hale and hearty.

Former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon has denied rumours making the rounds that he has passed away. 

On Monday, October 9, there were speculations in a section of social media that the retired army general had passed on at the age of 89.

However, while dispelling the rumours, his Personal Media Aide, Adeyeye E. Ajayi via a terse statement on Monday night said the former military leader is still alive.

According to him, Gowon said: “I am still around and well. I am not in a hurry”.

Also refuting the death speculations, former Minister of State for Education,  Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, who is said to have close ties with the war hero, described the rumours as the handiwork of mischief makers.

Gbagi made this known via a statement made available by his Chief Press Secretary, Orusi Kenneth, late on Monday.

The CPS said the Delta State Governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the March 18 guber election, said that General Gowon is in the United Kingdom and went on to add that he is hale and hearty.

Gbagi said: “General Gowon, is still much around with us, hale and hearty. He is not in a hurry to go anywhere.”

He further said; “I, Gbagi, just spoke with him. I hereby refute the rumour of the death of my friend, General Gowon.

“He has communicated to Nigerians that he is still much around, hale and hearty. Gowon is alive.”

Rumors of his death started trending on social media on Monday after the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the Niger Delta University in Bayelsa State, Professor Samuel Gowon Edoumiekumo, died on Saturday.
