Governorship primaries: APC shuts door against Mama Taraba, Adebayo Shittu, five others

-

By Ishaya Ibrahim

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday made public its decisions on the governorship aspirants screening committee report by releasing names of those cleared to take part in Saturday’s primary election holding across the states.

The biggest casualty was Barrister Adebayo Shittu, Minister of Communications, who was nor cleared to contest the primary election in Oyo State because he has no National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Certificate. Another notable aspirant is Hajia Aisha Alhassan, popularly known as Mama, who was until July 27, Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development.

The minister caused a stir in the party in September 2017 when she said during an interview with the BBC Hausa service that she would support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in 2019 even if President Muhammadu Buhari was interested in a second term in office.

The former governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Taraba State in 2015 said she would rather resign as minister than to abandon Atiku Abubakar “if he decides to run for Presidential elections in 2019.”

In Delta State, Chief Osiobe Eric Okoti was also not cleared but no reason was given for the decision.

In Niger State, the only aspirant that stood against the incumbent governor, Abubakar Mamma Jiya Maaji, was also not cleared.
