Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani has denied speculations that controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi helped in facilitating the release of the schoolchildren abducted in Kuriga area of the state by suspected bandits.
He, however, confirmed that Gumi offered to negotiate with the bandits for the release of the student but his request was not granted.
Gov Sani made this known, while featuring on popular Channels Television’s programme, ‘Sunday Politics’.
TheNiche had earlier reported that gunmen suspected to be bandits abducted 137 schoolchildren and their principal on March 7, from Chikun Local Government Area of the state.
However, in the wee hours of Sunday, the governor announced the release of the abducted pupils.
Confirming the report, the Nigerian Military later issued a statement saying the pupils were rescued from Zamfara State through a coordinated operation with local authorities and other agencies.
Answering questions during the TV interview, Gov Sani dismissed claims that ransom was paid to effect the release of the pupils.
He also countered innuendoes that Gumi helped in facilitating the rescue of the students.
He said: “All those speculations you are hearing today are figment of some people’s imagination.
“I can tell you that without any fear of contradiction. There was nothing like Gumi in this operation. I can tell you. I won’t undermine the efforts of our Armed Forces.”
