Godswill Akpabio takes oath of office as Senate President of 10th NASS
By Ishaya Ibrahim.
Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Obot Akpabio, has been sworn-in as the Senate President of the 10th National Assembly.
Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta Affairs, garnered 63 votes to defeat his closest challenger, the former governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, who polled 46 votes in a keenly contested election.
Akpabio is the preferred choice of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Senate Presidency.
Recall that he resigned as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs on 11 May 2022 on the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari to contest in the presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress. He later stepped down for Tinubu a few minutes before voting.
After clinching the position of Senate President, Akpabio was administered the oath of office as a member of the Senate and as President of the Senate.
The election of the Deputy Senate President is currently underway.
