Director-General of the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe, has reacted to his conviction for money laundering.
Okupe was on Monday found guilty by a Federal High Court in Abuja of receiving N240 million cash from a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), without going through a financial institution.
The trial judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) successfully established its case against Okupe, that evidence before it established that he had in the discharge of his official duties as former President Goodluck Jonathan’s media aide, accepted cash payments that were above the statutory threshold, without recourse to a financial institution.
The charges were centered on allegations of receiving various sums ranging from N10 million on different occasions from 2012 to 2015 from Dasuki.

Okupe was sentenced to two years imprisonment on counts 34 to 59 for laundering the said amount. The court, however, gave the defendant an option of N500, 000 fine on each of the counts.
Justice Ojukwu gave him up to 4.30 pm Monday to pay the fine totalling N13 million on all the charges he was found guilty of or be sent to the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Okupe succeeded in paying his fine before the deadline.
He posted on Twitter afterwards, “God is not man. The enemies have tried in so many ways but kept on failing. Victory is of God.”
