GIRLCHILD International Conference debuts in UNILAG

The GIRLCHILD conference is expected to explore the challenges of the girl child, deliver her from subjugation and change her trajectory through sensitization

The inaugural edition of the GIRLCHILD international conference will be held on Monday, October 30, 2023.

The event billed to commence at 1pm at the Afe Babalola Hall, University of Lagos (UNILAG) is expected to last for two hours.

Featuring during the event aimed at enlightening the girl child are Drama skits, Spoken words, Speeches from informed professionals and many other side attractions.

Speaking on the conference, the convener, Lechi Eke said: “This is a conference and not the International Day of the GirlChild which is a celebration and has passed.

“The Conference is a planned programme targeted to explore the challenges of the girlchild, deliver her from subjugation, and change her trajectory through sensitization,and support.

” It will be an annual event. Also, an international magazine on the GirlChild with global contributions will debut in this inaugural conference but will be properly launched next year.”

Chairing the occasion is the President and Chairman-in-Council Chartered Institute of Loans & Risk Management of Nigeria, Dr. Mrs H.N. Akubuiro.

She will be assisted by Her Excellency,   Haija Hansatu Zannah, Wife of the former Deputy Gov. Borno State.

The Keynote Speaker of the event is Dr. Mrs Chu Chu Onwuachi-Saunders, a Pediatrician from the United States whose father, Obi Prof. Patrick Chike Onwuachi, a one-time DG of NIIA under Gowon, hosted FESTAC ‘77.

Also speaking at the event are Mrs Dayo Tukuru, an Entrepreneur and furniture maker and Mrs Bisi Kayode Ajayi, a lawyer, with specialization in Gender & Child Protection.

Literature Scholar and Columnist, Mrs Lechi Eke, who doubles as the Convener of the event also acknowledged the roles of the chairperson and vice chairperson in pulling off the programme.

She also recognised the contributions of Her Excellency, Hajia Hauwa Umma Jigawa (formerly Ali Sa’ad,) former First Lady, Jigawa state, Dr Mrs Favour Okafor, Director, Federal parastatal, Mrs Nneka Okafor, Publicity & Documentary expert and consumers banker, Mrs Abiodun Oleghe.

Others who played prominent roles according to her are Dr Mrs Isoken Onoyona Ekeocha (Academia) Secretary and Dr Mrs Chy Ilonze, WHO, Geneva.

Winners of the GirlChild Essay Competition are expected to be announced during the conference.
