Ghana, the West African nation, has become the first country in the world to receive coronavirus vaccines under the World Health Organization-backed Covax facility for low- and middle-income countries.
The Unicef, which disclosed this on Wednesday, pointed out that the receipt marked the beginning of what has been called the largest vaccine procurement programme in history.
“With the first shipment of doses, we can make good on the promise of the Covax Facility to ensure people from less wealthy countries are not left behind in the race for life-saving vaccines,” said Unicef Executive Director, Henrietta Fore.
Poor and lower-middle-income countries will not pay for doses secured through Covax, according to Financial Times report.
