Garba Shehu also said despite the shortcomings of INEC in the February 25 election, it remained the most improved in Nigeria’s history

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu has said the results of the February 25 presidential election came as a shock to many who are used to rigging elections.

According to him, many of the state governors who saw the senate as their birth rights after completing their term in office were rejected by electorates even while in office.

The presidential spokesman made these assertions on Thursday morning when he appeared on Arise Television’s Morning Show program.

He said: “These governors are not gods. Before now, there used to be the assumption that when you finish your tenure as a governor, you are entitled to proceed to the Senate.

“But we have seen several of them lose their senatorial bids because, ultimately, it is the will of the people that count.”

He went on to say despite the shortcomings of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the February 25 election, it remained the most improved in Nigeria’s history.

Speaking further, Shehu said any plan by some governors to rig the March 18 governorship and state assembly elections will be resisted by security agents and they won’t be able to wield god-like influence on the outcome of the exercise.

He added that law enforcement agencies will clamp down on any acts of voter intimidation and violence during Saturday’s polls.

Prior to this, Garba Shehu in a statement issued on Monday had said that the Buhari regime had laid the groundwork for credible elections in the country, arguing it is left for INEC to manage the collation of results.
