Gambia stun Guinea to reach AFCON quarter-finals

AFCON debutant, Gambia pulled off another giant-killing act in their 1-0 defeat of Guinea, after beating Tunisia at the group stages

Scorpions of Gambia have continued their remarkable run and giant-killing act at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, after going unbeaten at the group stage.

The team ranked 150th in the world beat Mauritania and 2004 African champions Tunisia and pulled off a draw with the group leader Mali to advance to the round of 16. 

The Scorpions slightly shaded ball possession and had four shots on target while their more illustrious opponent, Guinea had just two shots on target throughout the match.

The Gambia took the lead after Musa Barrow scored in the 71st minute after collecting a pass from Yusupha Bobb and slotted it past Aly Keita from the centre of the box to make it 1-0 to the Scorpions. 

Burkina Faso defender Ibrahima Conte had an equaliser ruled out for offside after Gambia’s goal, Guinea also struck the post in injury time before another shot was tipped onto the crossbar by Baboucarr Gaye

The match also produced two red cards as  Gambia’s Yusupha Njie was sent off in the 87th minute while Guinea centre-back Conte was also dismissed in the 93rd minute for a second booking.

The Minnows however held on to earn a remarkable win, and will now face the hosts,  Cameroon in the quarter-finals on Saturday after the Indomitable Lions narrowly beat Comoros.
