No fewer than four persons died on Tuesday following the explosion that occured at Chemical Market in Onitsha, Anambra State.
About 20 others were said to have been injured.
Chairman of Chemical Market, Chinedu Ezekwike, confirmed the casualty figure. He said, “The chemical explosion that started from one of the shops even collapsed the building and in the process, four persons were killed.
“We are still waiting for the atmosphere to cool off, so we will search the debris to see if there are more persons or bodies trapped. But as it stands, scores of people have been injured.
“The explosion caused thick smoke, while iron bars and heavy stones started coming from the shops of the explosion and hitting people. We fear the casualty figure may increase.”

However, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the police was yet to be furnished with the casualty rate at the fire explosion in the chemical market.
“I don’t have the information on the level of casualty and the level of damage,” he told NAN.
“But I can confirm to you that there was fire explosion at the chemical market and our operatives led by DCP Operations, John Ogbodaga are on ground.
“The area has been cordoned off, the fire service were also on ground and the situation is under control.”
