Four die, 16 receive injuries in double accidents – one involving pedestrians

Four people have lost their lives and 16 others narrowly escaped with injuries in double accidents along the Ogun section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The accidents occurred near Kara Bus Stop, Isheri Olofin, and the Saapade Overhead Bridge.

Ogun Police Command said one accident at Kara Bus Stop around 5pm on Boxing Day involved a hit-and-run driver and two unidentified male pedestrians.

The victims were attempting to cross the expressway without proper caution and were struck by unidentified vehicles.

State Police Command spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident and said the victims were taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, where they were confirmed dead on arrival.

“The accident occurred at a point on the Isheri-Olofin corridor when the victims attempted to cross the expressway without a thorough view of the speeding vehicles,” she explained.

“The vehicles rammed into the two victims and sped off. Their bodies have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for preservation and autopsy. Efforts are ongoing to identify the victims and apprehend the fleeing drivers.”

On the same day at around 4:14pm, another accident occurred along the Sapaade stretch of the expressway involving a Toyota Hiace bus with the number plate LAGOS LSR585YH, resulting in the death of two passengers and injuries to 16 others.

Odutola disclosed that the bus, carrying about 18 passengers, suffered a rear tyre burst and somersaulted after the driver lost control while heading to Ibadan.

She said the tyre burst while the bus was at high speed, causing the driver to lose control, leading to a somersault before coming to a stop.

“Two passengers died on the spot, while 16 others sustained varying degrees of injuries. Emergency responders rushed the injured to Patmag Hospital in Ogere Remo for treatment.

“The deceased were taken to the State Hospital morgue in Isara Remo for preservation and autopsy. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene and remains at large.

“We have commenced investigations into both accidents and are making efforts to track down the fleeing drivers. Meanwhile, the recovered bus has been taken to the station for inspection by the Vehicle Inspection Office.”
