Fire guts Alaba shanties in Lagos

It was learnt that some traders in the Alaba market resorted to self-help to put out the fire before the arrival of emergency responders.

Fire broke out on Friday afternoon around Alaba International Market in the Ojo area of Lagos.

Spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, said on Twitter that policemen raided shanties around the market and arrested some persons who were found with ammunition before setting the shanties on fire.

It was learnt that some traders in the Alaba market resorted to self-help to put out the fire before the arrival of emergency responders.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in an update by its director, Margaret Adeseye, said that fire crew from Ojo, Sari-Iganmu and Ajegunle are “being turned back by angry mobs from performing their statutory duty but presently on standby.”

“The agency is consequently collaborating with security agents to address it,” she said.

In March, there was a fire outbreak at Balogun Market on Lagos Island.

Speaking on the incident, Adeseye said, ”The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending to a Fire outbreak at the famous Balogun Market which involved the topmost floor of a five-storey building.

“The fire is however under control as mitigation is on to limit its spread.”
