A fire outbreak that engulfed the upper floor of a one-storey residential building in the dead of the night has led to the deaths of a husband and wife and their grandchild in the Ori-Eru axis of Idikan, Ibadan.
A statement issued on Friday by Oyo State Fire Services Agency General Manager Yemi Akinyinka disclosed that the agency received a distress call about the incident from one Hassan at 3.46am and quickly deployed fire fighters to the scene.
“Upon arrival, we found the upper floor of a six-room residential building engulfed in flames, and we quickly took action to extinguish the fire completely,” he said.
Akinyinka confirmed that three victims – a husband, his wife, and their grandson – lost their lives in the blaze, but five others were rescued safely from the building.
He explained that the ground floor of the building and nearby properties were not affected by the fire.
“Our investigation revealed that the family attempted to keep warm due to the cold weather by using an open flame, which ultimately led to the fire disaster after they had fallen asleep.”
