Excitement mounts as the Nigerian football community eagerly anticipates the official unveiling of Finidi George, the newly appointed Head Coach of the Super Eagles, by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) today in Abuja.

Following his appointment as the substantive Head Coach of the Senior Men’s National Team two weeks ago, the former Ajax Amsterdam winger is poised to introduce his technical support staff, a crucial step in his new role. Reports suggest that Finidi has proposed a five-man technical team, including three foreign assistants, with former Nigerian international striker Daniel Amokachi expected to serve as his second assistant. Additionally, Abideen Baruwa, the team’s current goalkeepers trainer, is likely to retain his position.

“Finito,” as George is affectionately known among fans, is expected to reveal the names of his assistants during his unveiling ceremony, marking the commencement of his tenure with a significant announcement.

A source familiar with the arrangements stated, “Of course, the names of the assistants to Finidi George will be announced at the unveiling,” adding to the anticipation surrounding the event.

Prominent personalities, including Minister of Sports Development Senator John Owan Enoh, Permanent Secretary Mrs. Tinuke Watti, NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, are slated to attend the unveiling, as confirmed by the NFF’s Director of Communication, Ademola Olajire, in a customary release.

Prior to his appointment, the 52-year-old former Enyimba coach served as an assistant to Portuguese manager José Peseiro for 20 months, during which the Super Eagles secured qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. George’s tenure also saw the team narrowly miss out on clinching a fourth African title in Cote d’Ivoire.

With a decorated career as a player, including 62 caps for Nigeria at the senior level, George brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His immediate task involves leading the Super Eagles to victory in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa (home) and Benin Republic (away) in the coming weeks.
