Favour Ofili sets new Nigerian record in 200 metres

Favour Ofili broke Blessing Okagbare’s record in the 200 metres at the Tom Jones Memorial in James G. Pressly Stadium, Gainesville, Florida

A Nigerian athlete, Favour Ofili has set a national record in the women’s 200 metres race finishing first and returning a time of 21.96 seconds, which broke Blessing Okagbare National record of 22.04 seconds.

The 19-year-old Nigerian sprinter ran a very good race on Friday at the Tom Jones Memorial in James G. Pressly Stadium, Gainesville, Florida to finish ahead of Kamaya Debose-Epps who ran 22.81secs and Jonah Ross in 22.91secs. 

Ofili’s blistering 21.96 makes her the first collegian athlete to ever go sub 22 secs and the first Nigerian female athlete to go below  22 secs in the women’s 200m.

With her new time, she has now set a new LSU record as well as a new Nigerian National record in 200 400 metres. 

She also ran the second-fastest 400 metres of any woman in African history and claimed the 2022 world lead in the process.

Her performance sent netizens into a frenzy, especially with Blessing Okagbare facing three fresh doping charges. 

Ofili specialises in the 200 metres and 400 metres sprints and she is the 2019 African Games silver medalist in the 400 metres

She also won the 2019 African Youth Champion in 200 and 400 metres.
