The Experience Lagos: Seeing off 2014 in great fashion

Those who were at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, for the ninth edition of ‘The Experience Lagos’, on Friday, December 5, have a story or two to tell. Some of the world’s most popular Gospel artistes ministered in songs live at an event with the theme ‘One God, One Voice’.

Arguably the largest gospel music concert in Africa, among artistes who ministered at the concert were popular worship leader, Don Moen; multiple Grammy Award winner, Donnie McClurkin; and Jamaican gospel-reggae artiste, Chevelle Franklin. Others include Frank Edwards, Chioma Jesus, Sinach and Angela Christie.

At the pre-event conference, the foreign artistes expressed joy that they could make it to Nigeria for The Experience Lagos. According to Moen, who was featuring at the event for a seventh time, “Worship transcends generations, cultures, differences and ethnicities and the theme, ‘One God, One Voice’ expresses that perfectly.”

McClurkin said he had learned so much from Nigeria, especially the diverse praise songs from various parts of the country he had visited and his numerous opportunities to minister at The Experience Lagos.

Hours before the event, worshippers gathered at the TBS in their thousands, with the aim of praising and worshipping God with one voice.

The evening began with Sammie Okposo who sang alongside the Lagos Metropolitan Gospel Choir of the House on The Rock church. This was followed immediately by Freke Umoh from Akwa Ibom, whose deep ethnic renditions moved the crowd to dance. Onos Ariyo’s prophetic rendition of ‘Everything has Changed’ resonated with the crowd, who lifted their hands. And when Midnight Crew mounted the stage, attendees had an opportunity to praise with some of their popular songs, especially the one used to hail God as the king he is, ‘Igwe’.

Then, it was the turn of American saxophonist, Angela Christie, who was making her debut at the annual end of year event. Hers was a session of praise and worship, and the attendees connected with her as she rendered several songs, including popular ones.

Chioma Jesus and Sinach, who also ministered for the first time at the hugely popular concert, received a warm welcome from the crowd as they led sessions of praise and worship, which won’t be forgotten in a hurry.

Several men of God from various denominations across the country also prayed for peace and healing of Nigeria, and by extension the world.

At the end of the event, attendees were full of praises for the organisers, with many calling for another similar concert, even before December next year.

For the Convener of the event, Pastor Paul Adefarasin, the biggest fulfilment of The Experience Lagos was leading men and women in their thousands in worship and praise and to an experience with the Most High God, as he testified having had several of those life-changing encounters himself.
