EXCLUSIVE: Peter Obi chooses between Labour Party and SDP today

The question on the lips of many Nigerians since former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday is where next and what next?

Obi, who enjoys massive support from the youths, had purchased the N40 million form of the PDP and was screened to participate in the party’s presidential primary on Saturday.

But on Wednesday he announced his resignation from the main opposition party and withdrawal from the presidential race on the platform of the party.

As TheNiche correctly reported on Wednesday, though the vice presidential candidate of the PDP in the 2019 presidential election has quit the PDP, his presidential aspiration has not been jettisoned.

TheNiche also explained yesterday why Obi had to dump the opposition party one week to the primaries rather than going through the process and making up his mind what to do next, thereafter.

There have also been speculations as to which political party Obi will hitch a ride with to get to his Aso Rock destination in 2023.

Some political pundits said Mr. Obi may have decided to pitch his political tent with the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), a political party recently floated by former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

But TheNiche can authoritatively report that while the Obi campaign organisation has not taken any of the political parties, except for the PDP and APC, off the table, he has narrowed the choice to Labour Party (LP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The SDP, a centre-left political party with Alhaji Shehu Gabam as the National Chairman and Dr. Olu Ogunloye as the National Secretary, was created alongside the National Republican Convention by former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, as part of a democracy project meant to form two detribalized political parties – one slightly to the left and one to the right in 1989.

After the collapse of the Third Republic, the SDP was revived in the Fourth Republic.

According to Chief Olu Falae, a chieftain of the party, “SDP was revived to address the failings of the two prominent political parties – Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressive Congress – and to provide credible alternatives to Nigerians, as the SDP predates both the APC and PDP and has a history of winning elections.”

The Labour Party, a social democratic political party, was formed in 2002, as the party for social democracy.

A source in the Peter Obi Campaign Organisation told TheNiche that decision will be made today (Thursday).

“I can tell you that the choice has been narrowed down to the Labour Party and the Social Democratic Party.

“There is no truth in the speculation that he is joining the NNPP. That does not mean we cannot collaborate with the party.

“But the decision has been taken and it is either the LP or SDP and that announcement will be made today. Those two political parties agree with Mr. Obi’s political philosophy.

“Peter Obi is for the masses, the underprivileged in the society. He is the voice of the voiceless and we expect a political tsunami in the 2023 presidential election.

“So, the choice is between the Labour Party and the SDP and I can assure you that Nigerians are not going to wait for long. That decision will be made today.”
