Ex-Senate president, David Mark, escapes assassination

-

Senator David Mark, a four-term Senator who was victorious in the re-run election into the upper legislative arm recently, may not have celebrated his victory for a long time.

For, his convoy was attacked during his visit to Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State on Friday.

The Senator, who was on a fact-finding mission to the local government to ascertain the wanton destruction caused by Fulani herdsmen in Agatu, was welcomed with rains of bullets, which he was fortunate to escape.

Mark was not alone, as he had the likes of Comrade Abba Moro, Nigeria’s former interior minister, Honourable Ezekiel Adaji, a member of the House of Representatives, from Ohimini/Otukpo federal constituency, security personnel, journalists, as well as faithful party supporters in his entourage.

The attack which occurred at Akwu community of Agatu LGA, was swiftly repelled by security agents there, as nobody sustained injury or died.

Subsequently, the Fulani cattle rearers were seen moving in one direction, while the commotion lasted and the entourage also headed in another direction when the dust was settled by the security outfits.

The former Senate president visited the communities totally destroyed by the Fulani crisis such as: Aila, Akwu, Okokolo, Adagbo, Akwu, Ogboju and Odugbeho.

Afterwards, Senator Mark gave words of assurance to the residents that normalcy would return to the communities soon.

One of the angry youth leaders who was present during the senator’s visit, urged the former Senate president to tell President Muhammadu Buhari to remove the soldiers, as he said, “we are competent now to defend ourselves.”

The youths further blamed the Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom and the Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase for not visiting the destroyed communities.
