. Trash El Kanemi Warriors 4-0
Enugu Rangers FC otherwise known as Flying Antelopes on Sunday, October 2, 2016, defeated El Kanemi Warriors 4-0 to win the Nigeria top-flight title for the first time in 32 years.
But another serious contender for the title, Rivers United last week
failed to beat Abia Warriors, thereby surrendering the title to the Flying Antelopes.
Imama Amapakabo’s men could have waited for the last game of the season against El Kanemi Warriors on October 2, but Rivers United were held to a 0-0 draw by relegation-threatened Abia Warriors, while Wikki Tourists losing 1-0 against Shooting Stars.
The Flying Antelopes lead closest challengers, River United by three points but with superior goals difference before Sunday’s match with El Kanemi.
Thus, the Flying Antelopes are now champions after last Sunday’s 2-1 victory against Ikorodu United at the MKO Abiola Stadium, and October 2, 2016 4-0 trashing of El Kanemi FC.
After a gloomy outing last season that saw them narrowly avoiding the drop, Enugu Rangers began the 2015/2016 campaign on a blistering form as they sent warning signal to opposing teams.
Enyimba, Ifeanyi Ubah FC and Kano Pillars – considered the most likely title considered – all suffered inconsistent form to leave Rangers, Wikki Tourist and Rivers United to compete for the title.
