#EndSARS: Access Bank apologises for freezing accounts of protesters

-

By Ishaya Ibrahim, News Editor

Access Bank has said that it did not initiate the freezing of accounts of eight #EndSARS protesters but simply complied with a federal government order backed by a court order.

But young Nigerians are not interested in those details. To them, the source of the action against the protesters was Access Bank, hence, an online onslaught against the bank in which account holders were urged to either transfer their money out of the bank or close the account outright.

The unsettling situation has forced the bank to issue an apology to the affected customers, eight of them, over the inconveniences of having their accounts restricted and assured that it was eager to restore the accounts to their normal status once given the go ahead.

The bank in a tweet said: ” We want to express our sympathy for the inconveniences that eight of our customers are going through due to the restriction on their account as mandated by a federal court order. We are eager for this to be resolved as soon as possible.

“It is a common knowledge that we and the entire banking industry are regulated entities who operate under the authority of our regulators and law enforcement agencies. As such, we are compelled to comply with regulatory directives.”

Access Bank added: “We have always been committed to efforts that promote ease of banking and develop the communities we serve and we will not stop doing so.”
