Embrace new Police reforms, AIG advises officers

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 9, Hosea Karma, has charged men and officers within the Zone to embrace the ongoing reforms initiated by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to acquire modern techniques in effective policing.

AIG Karma gave the advice at a three-day workshop for the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Force in Umuahia, Wednesday.

He disclosed that the workshop was going on across all the 12 Zonal Commands as directed by IGP Idris under the new Police reforms.

He said that regular training and retraining programmes within the security community cannot be over-emphasized in view of the ever changing dynamics of crimes, its sophistication and lethality in the current contemporary society.

“The Special Anti-Robbery Squad was birthed in the Nigerian Police when the activities of the men of the under world became more pronounced and sophisticated, organized and offensive and indeed extremely violent in Nigeria.

AIG Karma revealed that it was as a result of public complaints on the activities of the Unit of the police that necessitated the workshop. “These compliant among other operational issues have necessitated the need for constant training and retraining of SARS operatives in line with their operational mandate and rule of law”.

He implored participants and other personnel under the Unit to pay attention to the training programme as it would assist the squad in living up to its mandate to the force and expectations of the society.

Also, the State Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade, in his remarks, commended IGP Idris on his initiative to introduce a new community Policing aimed at nipping crime from its bud.

Oyebede however charged men and officers to remain resolute in the discharge of their duties especially now that IGP and his management team have come up with the new reform policy.

He particularly lauded AIG Karma for his doggedness in ensuring that Police in the Zone are properly integrated into the new police reforms.
