American billionaire and business mogul, Elon Musk has said his tweet that he was buying Premier League (PL) giants, Manchester United, was a joke.

Musk had announced his intention to acquire the PL outfit from the Glazers on the microblogging platform, while in the midst of a political ideology discussion.

He tweeted, “Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome”.

However, the businessman, who is worth around $260 billion, after realising his tweet had generated a lot of controversies on Twitter, decided to clarify his statement.

“No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams,” he said.

Musk went on to say he would have bought Manchester United if he wanted to own a club because they were the football team he supported as a child.

“Although, if it were any team, it would be Man U. They were my fav team as a kid,” the billionaire further tweeted.

Meanwhile, fans of the Red Devils are no longer comfortable with the current club’s owners, the Glazer family and have been protesting, asking them to go.

They have accused them of not funding the club enough to remain competitive, they specifically accused them of not signing quality players who will take the club to the next level this season.

Manchester United are rock bottom of the Premier League log table with no point on board and a minus 5 goal difference, having scored only a goal and conceded 6.

They lost their opening game of the season at Old Trafford 1-2 to less fancied Brighton and were humiliated 4-0 in their second game against Brentford.

Manchester United next play their harsh rivals, Liverpool, who have only picked up 2 points this season on Monday, August 22.
