The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as false, baseless and diversionary the call by the Enugu State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the cancellation of the last weekend Presidential and National Assembly elections’ results in the State on the alleged grounds that “the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) and security agents connived with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the elections in favour of the PDP”
In a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Dr. Okey Eze, the party stated that it was a common knowledge that Enugu is the home-base of the PDP in the entire South East geo- political zone since the inception of the party in 1998 and its popularity in the State is formidable and has grown beyond bounds over the years.
Dr. Eze noted that the landside victory the PDP recorded in Enugu State was never a surprise to any unbiased political adherent in the country and beyond, but a true reflection of the party’s strong hold in the State.
He maintained that the trumped-up accusation by the State leadership of the APC was not only an attempt to give their masters some flimsy excuses for the well deserved failure, but also another senseless move to divert the attention of their said masters from the chunk of money that was handed over to them to execute the elections, which eventually disintegrated the party rather than uniting it, following the reported case of the inability of their leaders to account for the monies released.
The PDP spokesman condemned ‘the brazen act of insensitivity and crass desperation’ by the leadership of the APC in the State in spreading false allegations against the PDP, the state leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agents over an elections that was transparent, peaceful, free and fair to the satisfaction of virtually all stakeholders in the State.
Eze also revealed that abysmal failure suffered by the APC was a clear indication of its glaring unpopularity in the State, occasioned by the inability of the party (APC) to convince the people of a defined and realistic development agenda that can outweigh the laudable polices and people-oriented programmes of the PDP government in Enugu State.
He said that no amount of smear campaign, blatant lies and unfounded accusations against the PDP by the opposition APC in the State will affect the swelling popularity and acceptability the party (PDP) enjoys in the State and its chances in winning all the remaining elections.
The party therefore called on the electoral umpire and general public to disregard the allegations by the opposition APC as they were meant to mislead, blackmail, and discredit the peaceful exercise in the state.
