The only goal of the first half was scored as early as the 7th minute when Joao Felix headed in Renan Lodi’s inviting cross to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Atletico had an opportunity to take a two goal lead when Sime Vrsaljko headed the ball off Lindelof onto the United bar in the closing moments of the first half.

Manchester United restored parity in the 80th minute when substitute Anthony Elanga scored after he was put through by Bruno Fernandes.

The 19-year-old academy graduate had been on the pitch less than 6 minutes when he raced onto Bruno Fernandes’ perfectly-weighted pass to roll the ball past Jan Oblak.

Before the equaliser, Atletico Madrid had thought they were going to take a narrow 1-0 advantage to Old Trafford after controlling the game without really dominating possession.

United had plenty of the ball possession, but they were slow and indecisive in possession and barely looked capable of breaching their well-drilled opponent.

However, Elanga’s introduction and late strike changed the complexion of the tie before the second leg in Manchester in three weeks.
