The Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu has congratulated Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and his Ebonyi State counterpart, Governor Dave Umahi on their victories at the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Mr Uche Anichukwu, his Special Adviser (Media) said in a statement that reacting to the verdicts of the Supreme Court which upheld the April 2015 governorship elections in Rivers and Ebonyi states won by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates, Senator Ekweremadu commended the apex court for preserving the mandate of the people.
He said: “By these verdicts, the Supreme Court has shown itself, once again, as the last hope of the common man. The apex court has continued to demonstrate that it has all that it takes to deepen our democracy and uphold the people’s rights to freely elect their leaders.
“These are important victories, are not only for the people of Rivers and Ebonyi states, but also for the PDP. These verdicts have further confirmed that both states are PDP strongholds and I have no doubt that the people are even further bolstered by this judgment to keep it so”.
He urged both governors to continue to reciprocate the people’s goodwill and support through the delivery of democracy dividends in their respective states.
…Ikpeazu congratulates Umahi, Wike for victory
Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has congratulated his PDP colleague governors of Rivers and Ebonyi states, Barister Nyesom Wike and Dr. Dave Umahi respectively, on the reaffirmation of their electoral victories on Wednesday by the Supreme Court.
Governor Ikpeazu said the verdict of the apex court on the cases of the two governors is a victory for democracy and a vindication of the people’s long-drawn struggle for justice, adding that it is also a tiding of good hope for the two states.
Mr Godwin Adindu, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, in a statement on Wednesday said the governor commended his two colleagues for being the custodians of divine mandates which represent the will and aspiration of their people and thanked the apex court for ensuring that the mandates remain sacrosanct.
Ikpeazu also noted that the verdict of the Supreme Court on these two states has gone a long way in restoring the hope and confidence of the Nigerian people in the sanctity of the judiciary and commended the apex court for standing firm in the defence of the law and Constitution of the land.
He further observed that the Supreme Court has acted well in setting the standard and precedence for proper interpretation of our electoral procedures, noting that with the standard set by the apex court, the contradictory verdicts experienced in the appellate courts will not repeat in the years ahead.
He commended the people of Rivers and Ebonyi States for putting up a good fight in supporting their governors and for their perseverance and doggedness throughout the legal battles that have now ended in victory and celebration.
He also expressed optimism that the two states will witness a watershed of drastic progress in the hands of the two dynamic leaders in the days ahead and advised his collegue governors to see their victory as the victory of the masses.
