Victor Uwaifo, the pioneer Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Edo State, would be immortalized by the state government for his contributions to the development of the state and the country.
Uwaifo, the lecturer, musician, writer, sculptor, and musical instrument inventor, died at the age on August 28, 2021, at the age of 80.
A statement from the Edo State government quoted the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Osaigbovo Iyoha, as saying that: “In a couple of days, you will know what we are doing as a government to immortalise our son and legendary musical icon. Plans are on in this regard and will be unveiled before the end of the burial ceremony.”
He said the state government would join the Uwaifo’s family to give the music icon a befitting burial.
“Late Prof. Victor Uwaifo has brought honour to Edo State and Nigeria, bringing us to global recognition.,” the chief of staff said.
The programme of the event for the burial rite of Uwaifo begins on October 14 with a day of Tributes, Vigil Mass/Service of Songs at Ogbe Hard-court, Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, from 2 pm to 6 pm.
The following day will be the lying of state, then the social activities at Garrick Playground, Ekenwan Road, Benin City.
The four-day programme will end on Sunday 17th October 2021, with a Thanksgiving Service at Holy Cross Catholic Cathedral, Mission Road Benin City.
